Rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis
is a condition caused by the release of myoglobin, a pigment located
in skeletal muscle tissue. Myoglobin travels through the bloodstream
and eventually reaches the kidneys, which make an effort to filter
the excess myoglobin from the blood. As the myoglobin is broken
down, some of its toxic chemical contents are released. As a result,
too much myoglobin can cause kidney damage.
Baycol
and Rhabdomyolysis
Statin drugs are a known cause of
Rhabdomyolysis, although the symptoms are usually caught early enough
to prevent permanent damage. However, when compared to other statin
drugs, a significantly higher occurrence of severe Rhabdomyolysis
exists among patients who have taken Baycol. As a result, Bayer
has recalled Baycol from the market.
